In our world, today, we’ve become more accepting than our previous generations. However, there are still a lot of people in our world that demand to continue living in a binary world; yes or no, black or white, good or bad, gay or straight, normal or weird. Part of me believes the world will never accept that nothing in life is as simple as yes or no. But why is this?
It’s understandable that dividing the world helps us to be less frightened by what is in it, but have we taken it too far? A key example of this; it's turned into a day where people are either a hero or a terrorist, but it’s possible to be neither, or perhaps both, all depending on personal opinion. But people have stopped showing these opinions because it has become wrong to go against the majority opinion. Time seems to be going backwards again, refusing to accept new possibilities, and going back to a status quo that rejects individuality.
This leads me to my next point; are you a weirdo or are you normal? Can you categorise yourself like this? Or would you rather not be labelled and just be yourself? The question “what is normal” is always asked by older generations when they are trying to prove a point, but does anyone truly think about this statement in times other than when they want to be right? There is no ‘normal’ or ‘weird’, just people trying to get by in a world we are all living in.
Coming away from the topic of people, this divide is also shown in life; fictional or factual? Why does anything have to be either? Most people define factual as being fact due to having scientific proof, however, this shouldn’t mean that anything with no scientific evidence should be labelled as fictional. Several groups of people all have different beliefs about life after death; some believe in reincarnation, some believe in heaven and hell, and others believe in nothing; death is death, not to mention hundreds of other ideas that people have. There is no proof scientifically for reincarnation, other than the ‘ramblings’ of a handful of children claiming to have past lives, but does this mean the beliefs of millions of people are simply fictional? Or is it possible for a middle ground that is neither factual or fictional?
Why has it become wrong to show ambivalence?
A lot of people believe an answer must be one or another, but an open mind can accept halfway. The more you know, the harder it is to make up your mind about what ‘categories’ people, beliefs, and objects should be put in, because the more you know, the more you see, and the more you can accept. It’s ignorant to believe everything can be put into a category; to make life so simple. Being open minded about what the world holds, and what can happen, allows you to see clearly, and to hold your own knowledge, even when other people don’t agree. Not putting everything around you into categories allows you to see the world for how it is, rather than what’s put in front of you, like in Plato’s cave analogy; letting your mind adjust to new ideas rather than forever focusing on the shadows given to you. Surely, it’s better to look for what you cannot see, rather than accepting the confines of the world?
